Our changing world makes it even more important to ensure that our students have sufficient structured and unstructured opportunities for exercise. The school day at SBS provides a balanced approach to regular physical activity. Every student enjoys 60 minutes of supervised (unstructured) free play on our spacious playground each day. This playground time is beloved by the children, and offers a kind of physical activity that is both child-directed and social. A great deal of learning takes place on our playground.
To complement the free active time, Sunnybrook offers a full Athletics program. Our program includes Baseball, Basketball, Dance, Martial Arts, Rock Climbing, Skating, Track and Field, Yoga, Curling and much more. SBS students attend Phys Ed classes 3 days out of 5. Beginning in grade 2, students participate in various activities off-site, to enhance the program. A shuttle bus enables them to maximize use of time for these classes and to use facilities in the community to enrich our program. Within the Phys Ed program we also strive to provide a balance, with students participating in a combination of team and individual activities. This allows for individual student preferences as well as skill development throughout the program.
The sports program includes:
- Badminton
- Ball hockey

- Curling

School Athletic Teams
Sports have become a significant element of a balanced elementary program. Opportunities for healthy competition with athletes from other schools build sportsmanship in our students. Sunnybrook School is a member of the Small Schools Athletic Federation (SSAF). Our older students participate in co-ed SSAF tournaments with other schools in the GTA.
SBS offers many opportunities for student participation in athletics. Our teams compete in:
- Basketball
- Cross country
- Soccer
- Soft ball
- Track and field
The experience of competing against other schools, developing team cooperative skills, supporting peers, learning to win and lose graciously are all integral to the team sports experience at SBS. Our students enjoy their challenges and celebrate their victories as their skills and sportsmanship grow in their elementary years. The team experience builds character and collaborative skills while being a lot of fun for the students.
SBS parents take pride in coming out in support of our young athletes, and they contribute to the spirit of competition in our school. Parent attendance at tournaments helps our teachers to keep the events both fun and safe for our students.
SSAF tournaments offer a unique opportunity for our students to develop significant skills beyond the classroom. We get a wonderful turnout for our teams, who experience success in their tournaments. Our team mascot is Merton the Wizard and our athletes wear their SBS school colours with pride.
